Job Description
The Meteorologist is responsible for analyzing weather data, forecasting weather conditions, and providing timely and accurate weather reports to the public, industries, and organizations. The role involves using scientific models and meteorological tools to predict weather patterns, as well as reporting on severe weather events such as storms, hurricanes, and other natural phenomena.
Job Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field. A Master’s or PhD in Meteorology or Climatology is preferred for research-based roles.
Experience: Prior experience as a meteorologist in broadcast, research, or government is highly desirable.
Certifications: Professional certification from a recognized meteorological organization (e.g., the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation) is preferred.
Technical Skills: Proficiency with meteorological software, satellite and radar systems, and data modeling tools. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a plus.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially for broadcast meteorologists. Ability to explain complex weather concepts in simple terms for public audiences.
Attention to Detail: Strong observational and analytical skills to monitor and interpret weather data accurately.
Skills Required
Work may be performed indoors in an office or broadcasting studio environment.
During severe weather conditions, work hours may extend to include evenings, weekends, or holidays.
Fieldwork may be required for research purposes or to cover extreme weather events.
